The AWS Certified Welding Inspector, or CWI, is a credential from the American Welding Society (AWS) that many welders and quality-assurance technicians pursue because it can meaningfully raise their pay and open inspection roles. It is also expensive and multi-part, and the sites that rank for it are mostly selling a seminar. This guide walks the exam end to end so you can decide what you actually need, from someone who sells you nothing.
Who can sit the exam
Eligibility is a combination of education and documented welding-related work experience. The exact combination depends on your highest level of education: more schooling reduces the years of experience required, and less schooling increases it. Someone with a four-year engineering degree needs the least experience, a two-year technical degree needs more, a high-school diploma more still, and there is a path for candidates without a diploma that requires the most documented time in the trade.
You certify your experience on the application, and your work has to be in a welding-related occupation as AWS defines it, not any job in a shop that happens to weld. The American Welding Society is the authority on the current eligibility table, so confirm your specific case against the official application before you pay anything. A common and avoidable mistake is booking the exam and then discovering your documented experience does not add up the way you assumed.
There is also a lower rung, the Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI), for people who pass the same exam parts but do not yet meet the full experience requirement. The three parts
The exam is split into three parts, and you must pass all of them.
- Part A, Fundamentals. A closed-book test of welding fundamentals: welding processes, basic metallurgy, weld symbols, discontinuities, destructive and nondestructive testing methods, mechanical properties, and general inspection concepts. You bring no references to this part, so it rewards genuine recall. For most candidates this is the part that needs the most study, because it is the one you cannot look up your way through.
- Part B, Practical. A hands-on part. You inspect molded plastic weld replicas using real inspection gauges, working against a supplied document called the Book of Specifications. You are the inspector, not the welder: Part B tests your inspection judgment and your ability to apply an acceptance criterion, not your ability to lay a bead. - Part C, Code Application. An open-book test where you apply one specific welding code, the code you registered for, to inspection scenarios. Because it is open book, the skill is fast, confident navigation of the code book, not memorization. How scoring works
Each part is scored independently and you must meet the passing threshold on each one. A strong score on Part A does not carry a weak Part C; there is no averaging across parts. The sequencing rule catches people out: you must attempt all three parts before you may retake any part you failed. You cannot pass Part A, walk out, and re-sit Part C in isolation on a later date without having attempted the others. How hard is it, honestly
The course-sellers have an incentive to make the exam sound harder than it is, because fear sells the seminar. The neutral read is that it is a demanding, wide exam that a prepared candidate passes and an underprepared one does not, and that the parts fail people for different reasons. Part A fails people on breadth of fundamentals; Part C fails people on code-navigation speed under the clock; Part B fails people who have never handled the replica format before exam day. A realistic study plan
For most candidates the honest plan is:

- Drill Part A fundamentals, since it is closed book and pure recall. This is where a structured course or a good self-study text earns its keep, and where the free diagnostic practice test shows you which fundamentals topics are weakest.
- Practice Part C as a navigation skill against your chosen code book. Speed comes from repetition, from learning the code’s table of contents and index cold, not from reading the code cover to cover.
- Get hands-on with the Part B format before exam day so the replicas, the gauges, and the Book of Specifications are not a surprise. This is the cheapest large gain available, because Part B failures are so often format-shock rather than lack of ability.
Give yourself a real runway. Candidates who cram tend to fail Part A on breadth; candidates who spread the study over a couple of months tend to pass. The exam is not a memory trick, it is a body of knowledge plus two applied skills.
What this exam costs
The base examination is 1,255 US dollars for American Welding Society members and 1,520 US dollars for non-members, where the non-member price includes a three-year membership. On top of that you may pay a 125-dollar application fee if your application is handled by AWS headquarters, a 60-dollar-per-part seat fee at a Prometric test center, an Authorized Training Facility fee for Part B that the facility sets rather than AWS, and, if you choose it, the cost of a seminar or pre-seminar course. After you pass
The certification is valid for nine years, with renewal applications required at year three and year six and a full recertification at year nine.
